Crowd Out Chicago Community Gathering in Pilsen!

August 7, 2017

Calling everyone who’s ever wanted to sing in a 1,000 person choir! Trained or untrained, all that matters is that you want to be part of a citywide group that will sing at the Bean on October 1st.

Join us for this month’s Illinois Speaks meet up at Citlalin Gallery in partnership with Pilsen Alliance. (August 15th at 6 pm).

This month’s #ILSpeaks will be a special one – featuring a look at Ray Patlán’s updated design of the Casa Aztlán murals and a musical presentation by Son Monarcas that’s part of our citywide initiative crowd out (

We’ll start with a conversation, moderated by Xochyl Perez, on what cultural resources are in Pilsen and what types of resources people would like to see in the neighborhood. We’ll also have an update on last month’s conversation about redesigning the Casa Aztlán murals. The original muralist, Ray Patlán, along with others are looking for community feedback before agreeing to replace the murals that were destroyed a few months back.

Then we’ll introduce David Lang’s crowd out, a choral piece designed for 1,000 singers. We’re helping to put on the U.S. premiere of this piece by hosting community gatherings and drawing singers from each of Chicago’s 50 wards. Son Monarcas will be helping us out as we learn the piece and then will give a peformance to close out the evening.

As always, Illinois Speaks is free and open the public. Bring yourself and your friends to voice your opinions about what cultural resources Pilsen has and needs and add your voice (singing, talking, and even shouting!) to the choir.
