Michael Hawthorne reports in his article, Air pollution: Chicago-area coal plant to shut down earlier than expected, that a coal plant in the Indiana Illinois border, on the Hammond side, has announced that they will close their coal burning power facility in March. Dominion Resources said it will shut down its State Line Power Station 2 years before it had to due to cost of cleaning up the plant. What this does is set up a very interesting situation where more and more coal plants are being shut down because of stricter pollution laws and the costs associated with cleaning up. The article mentions Midwest Generation and their plants in Pilsen and Little Village. Hawthorne states that environmental organizations and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have been pushing for the Chicago plants to clean up or shut down. He also states that earlier this month House Speaker Michael Madigan killed a deal that would have shut down the plants in return for a long term wind energy contract from the state.
